We employ numerical flow simulations for determination of the uncertainty of the flow rate integration for ultrasonic flow meters, when the installation is exposed to an upstream flow distortion and a resulting nonuniform velocity distribution occur.

For the calculation of the uncertainty of an acoustic transit time flow meter (ultrasonic flow meter) installation in a specific hydro power plant, etaeval performs numerical flow simulations (CFD) in close collaboration with the Competence Centre Fluid Mechanics and Hydro Machines at the Hochschule Luzern. Based on the simulated distorted velocity distributions in the measuring section, the flow rate integration is evaluated for various flow rates and flow conditions. The weights needed for the integration are calculated with the OWICS- (optimized weighted integration for circular sections), OWIRS- (optimized weighted integration for rectangular sections) or in case of general sections with the OWISS-method (optimized weighted integration for simulated sections). Up to now, we performed more than a dozen of such simulations for acoustic transit time flow meter installations all around the world.
